STRENGTHENING THE COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
confidence boosted after the special needs’ pageantry
It gives me great pleasure to introduce myself as the current the winner, Mr. Niger Delta Special Persons Ambassadors (NDSPA) 2017, an initiative that is fully powered by Rugged Steps Foundation for African Youth Development (RSFAYD), I’m also a Kenule Benson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic graduate of Business Administration and Management.
Being the first male winner of the 2017 NDSPA has really inspired me so much; my confidence level has greatly improved on a daily basis. Paste
Please, allow me to run you through my experience before the much talked about emergence as the Male winner at the 2017 NDSPA. Several weeks to the main contest, I was called-up by Prince (Amb) Kalada Oko-Jaja, Executive Director-RSFAYD, who wanted to know if I will be interested in a pageantry for People with Special Needs. Firstly, I laughed about it, in my mind I pictured myself on stage, truth is, I hate to be in the face of the crowd. Thereafter, I began to question myself over and over again, “how can I participate in modeling and pageantry with my clutches”? never done this before. These words continued to echo in my head. Sincerely, I must say that Prince Kalada encouraged me a lot, after several thoughts I gave in to be part of the event. As soon as my interest was expressed I was called officially by the Program manager directing me to go for my clothing at one of the volunteer fashion houses, at this time I had scaled through auditions/selection process. After that, I was invited for further briefing and trainings alongside other contestants prior to the main event day. Indeed, I met a lot of persons that motivated and inspired me. Fast forward to the day of the main event day proper, I was nervous but the moment I got on the platform, I felt an overwhelming confidence overshadowed me. I found the new me, there and then I realized that “there’s a giant in everyone, but it takes just one step to discover it”, I saw myself on the run way, the bravery photo shoot session, I was responding to technical questions right before an array of distinguished guests of over a thousand, five hundred glittering personalities. All that nervousness left me, ever since then, the overall perception about myself changed for the better, today, I’m proud to say that I can do and become anything I want to be in the near future. I realized that all the negative thought patterns I had were my limitations. That event produced a new Reuben.
This pageantry has truly changed everything about me, it has radically grown the deep perception of myself, and even the way people see me. Reuben doing pageantry on clutches? Wow! It was
truly an amazing experience where I had to even study about the good people of Imo State and speak about their culture and tradition. I saw it, I did it and I won it fearlessly. It was truly a lovely experience.
